Those Crazy Conservatives

According to a research team at Berkeley, political conservatives like Reagan, Hitler, and even Stalin are motivated by a shared psychology. Those motivations include "fear and aggression, dogmatism and intolerance of ambiguity; uncertainty avoidance; need for cognitive closure; and terror management." Conservatives are also suspicious of change and accept the basic premise of inequality. Read the full press release here. They needed a study to figure this out? Couldn't they just watch Fox for 10 minutes?

And here's another story that is sure to piss off the flag-wavers in Washington. Emmanuel Todd, the French historian who predicted the fall of the Soviets, says that the Pax Americana ain't gonna happen.

Let the flaming begin.

Yes, the study is interesting and has reliability. As a liberal, these stereotypes of conservative mind are common knowledge. To study the personality and present it in a valid study brings issues to more light. Of course, this study has been ridiculed by conservatives and regardless of the sensitivity and specificity of tests done for study accuracy, it would not be received as a valid study by the group. Rush Limbaugh actually went on air and said "no hypocrisy here" regarding his drug use and his condemnation of drug users. What is evident, particularly with conservatives, is that when issues are brought forth, the first response is to react angrily and put up a smoke screen. Hypocrisy knows no political party and if Limbaugh just admitted to it, he may have paved a new way for conservatives. The fear of conservatives is evident, particularly in my work place. I was recently reading Al Franken's new book when a nurse's aide approached me and in both nervous tone and mannerism she said, "don't believe everything you read in there, there is another side." The fact is, Franken is a comedian and his writing is good humor, wit and intelligence. It invokes both simplicity and the abstract. This woman was literally afraid and I just wanted to tell her to lighten up and not be afraid in life. Not everything is literal and one will not in situations of ambiguity but if I were to tell her that she would undoubtedly be confused. As liberals, I believe we look at both sides of situations a little more than conservatives. There is more critical thinking versus reacting and reacting angrily. Rush Limbaugh is the prime example.
