As I was saying... Saw

As I was saying...

Saw The Two Towers over Christmas. My short review: go see it. Yes, it has elves and swords and lots of British accents, but it's not just a cinematic wet dream of some pimply-faced 15-year old D&D freak. It's a moving and thrilling piece of work. Peter Jackson is on the verge of becoming this generation's Kurosawa.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year. My own celebrations will be rather subdued. The thought of venturing out tonight doesn't fill me with excitement. On the whole, I think 2002 was a pretty dreary year for the world. Let's hope 2003 is a bit brighter, but it's difficult to say that with a war looming. But you probably had a better year than these people.

Okay, I just wrote a funny and informative post, but Blogger seems to have devoured it. I'll try again tomorrow. Darned newfangled technology. Maybe I should just hand out flyers on street corners.

Straight outta Kafka, here's a

Straight outta Kafka, here's a cheery story for the holiday season. You have to admire our highly trained airport security personnel. Good thing we federalized them, or imagine the pickle we'd be in.

Oh, and Trent Lott is complaining that he's been victimized because he's from Mississippi, conservative, and Christian. I guess he forgot to mention the whole racism/nostalgia for segregation thing. And who knew that Republicans could play the victim game? Granted, it's a pretty pathetic attempt, but at least he's trying.

Much to my surprise, it's

Much to my surprise, it's becoming more apparent that Trent Lott is heading for a big fall. I'd like to think that the GOP is doing some serious soul-searching regarding its checkered history on race relations, but that's probably expecting too much. And let's not forget that our beloved Attorney General (aka The Guy Poring over Your Library Card Records) has said some questionable things that have been conveniently forgotten. And yes, there are certainly bigoted Democrats as well. But the GOP has built much of its base by exploiting the subtle but undeniably powerful brand of racism found in much of rural and suburban America. And yet people are shocked, shocked I say, when a good ol' boy like Lott lets down his guard and allows his true colors to shine. Please.

Two Towers had a boffo opening day, which pleases me. It's been nominated for a Golden Globe as well. It probably won't win, but it's nice to see that the press has a bit of a geek streak.

I really considered skipping work

I really considered skipping work and going to see The Two Towers today. Fortunately, duty won out over impulse. I'll probably wait until next week and see it with my family.

Don't have time to write much more, but here's an amusing link.

I cleaned up the site

I cleaned up the site and archived some of the older posts. Let me know if you have trouble finding anything.

I saw the latest Star Trek film last night with my friend Tim. It actually wasn't bad, despite some of the reviews in the press. I think you have to be to be a bit of a fanboy to appreciate these films. They're not great examples of moviemaking, but I can think of worse ways to waste two hours.

Still no snow here in Minneapolis. I'm not complaining much (wheelchairs and snow are not a match made in heaven), but everything just looks sort of brown and dreary. But it's supposed to snow later this week.

If anyone is looking for a gift for your favorite webmaster, I'm kind of interested in the Sims Online. God knows I don't need to spend more time on the computer, but I'm intrigued by the premise of this game. It's been getting some attention in the media and I'm a sucker for hype. Besides, this game will let me realize my dream of living in a house with a lava lamp in every room.

News Flash: Republicans are still

News Flash: Republicans are still clueless. Yes, Mr. Lott, if only good ol' Strom had been elected President and kept them coloreds in the kitchen and fields where they belong. And maybe the Jews wouldn't have gotten control of Hollywood. Sheesh. Can we have a temporary ban on dumb, white, racist, male senators? I'm sure Senator Lott could find work somewhere else, like maybe a greeter at Wal-Mart. I'd suggest being a server at Shoney's, but I think that fine restaurant chain is simply too classy for him.

I read this morning that there's going to be another Mad Max film. Very cool. Road Warrior is one of my favorite films and I'm anxious to see what the plot is for this one. Just no Tina Turner, okay?

After much delay, my friend

After much delay, my friend Erin and I are getting together tonight. She's one of the few people from law school with whom I stay in touch. I (mostly) enjoyed law school, but it can be such a competitive environment. You're alwas competing for grades, journal positions, summer jobs, jobs after graduation, and so on. Not the most conducive environment for bonding.

Still need to do my Christmas shopping. I usually do most of my shopping on-line. But I do enjoy clipping the occasional ankle at the mall.
